JACKSON, MI –
The Michigan Department of Corrections has cut two prisoner visitation days as part of a money-saving effort.
Spokesman John Cordell tells the Jackson Citizen Patriot the elimination of Tuesday and Wednesday visits will save the department millions of dollars.
Opponents say cutting days further isolates prisoners from their families and disrupts the remaining visitation times.
Barbara Levine is the executive director of Citizens Alliance on Prisons and Public Spending. She says the corrections department keeps "trying to save money on the backs of prisoners."
The new visiting schedule went into effect in the middle of June.
