Since 2006, a deadly bat fungus called white nose syndrome has spread its way throughout the eastern U.S. and Canada, decimating bat populations. This April, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources confirmed that the disease has been detected in Michigan.Infected bats have been found in three Michigan counties, and the fungus is likely to spread. DNR wildlife veterinarian Dr. Dan O'Brien says the disease attacks hibernating colonies of bats, and was originally diagnosed in New York State in 2006.
