On this day in 1947, Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company died at his beloved residence of Fair Lane in Dearborn Michigan. From an early age Ford had a talent for machinery. In his teens, his father gave him a pocketwatch which he’d disassemble and reassemble over and over again. Early in his career he worked for the Detroit Edison Company and showing great talent became Chief Engineer. In 1903 he founded the Ford Motor Company and developed the Model T. His greatest innovation was the assembly line, and used it to become the first car company to mass produce. This created jobs for hundreds of thousands of Michiganders over the decades. He once said “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.” During his funeral, at its peak, approximately 5,000 people passed his coffin every single hour.
