On this day in 1957, the Lansing board of Education endorsed the establishment of Lansing Community College. Between 1952 and 1956, spurred by the return of GIs from Korea, college enrollments in the United States increased by more than 37 percent. But in Michigan, community college enrollment soared by 150 percent. The time seemed right for Lansing to establish its own. The first LCC class taught at the school was a math refresher course with It had 32 students and began the summer before the actual school year started. In that opening semester, 425 students enrolled in mechanical, apprenticeship programs, licensed practical nursing, plus electrical and civil technologies,. In the early days, they made do with what they had. Tuition was collected in a cigar box and the library was comprised of books on four different window sills located in the dean’s office.
