A new state audit is again calling into question how well the state protects vulnerable adults.
As The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports, it’s the second report in less than a month that suggests Governor Rick Snyder’s administration has mismanaged services for that population.
The report says the state mishandled cases in its Adult Protective Services program for years. The audit found the Michigan Department of Human Services failed to investigate complaints of abuse and did not adequately train caseworkers and supervisors.
Maura Corrigan directs DHS.
“Are we perfect in our knowledge of all of the operations?” she asks. “We sure aren’t. But we are committed to doing better than we did yesterday.”
Corrigan says two supervisors have been removed from the program in light of the audit’s findings – but have not been fired. Another recent state audit showed D-H-S and the Michigan Department of Community Health put vulnerable adults at risk in the state’s Medicaid in-home care program.
