Democratic Secretary of State Candidate Jocelyn Benson

Democratic secretary of state candidate Jocelyn Benson is proposing a five-point plan to ensure the security of Michigan elections.

It includes making statistically-based post-election audits standard, standardizing poll worker training and convening a commission of top election security experts to advise Michigan. Other facets of the proposal outlined Tuesday are toughening penalties for tampering with voting machines and switching Michigan to a different system to crosscheck voter files against other states.

Benson detailed her plan at the Michigan Association of County Clerks' annual conference and later to reporters. She says she wants to be prepared on "day one" to ensure elections are secured against "all known and emerging threats."

Republicans will choose their secretary of state nominee at a convention Saturday. The candidates are Mary Treder Lang and Joseph Guzman.
