At Least Six Michigan Republican Lawmakers Attend Meeting With President Trump

Phillip Hofmeister

The Legislature’s Republican leaders led a delegation of GOP lawmakers to meet Friday with President Donald Trump.

House Speaker Lee Chatfield (R-Levering), Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake) and at least four other Republican lawmakers are in the group.

The Biden campaign and Michigan Democrats criticized the visit as inappropriate amid the ongoing political fights.

But Speaker Chatfield tweeted he would not apologize for accepting an opportunity to meet with the President.

The meeting took place as a certification fight rages over Michigan’s November 3 election results. And the White House described the unusual visit as “routine.”

The tallies show President-elect Joe Biden winning the Michigan by over 150,000 votes.

There was a battle over certifying the results from Detroit and Wayne County and next the Board of State Canvassers has a meeting scheduled for Monday to finalize certification.

The President has refused to acknowledge he lost to Biden. That includes in Michigan, a state he won four years ago.
