MI commission report urges action on human trafficking

michigan.gov

Yesterday, Attorney General Bill Schuette unveiled a 64-page report to address the issue of human trafficking in Michigan. The Michigan Human Trafficking Commission is a bipartisan group including legislators, law enforcement officials, educators and other stakeholders assembled to addressed the issue of modern day slavery.Bridgette Carr is director of the Human Trafficking Clinic at the University of Michigan’s School of Law and a member of the commission. She defines human trafficking as when individuals are compelled into service, either in the sex trade or in labor trafficking. That compulsion can be by force, fraud, or coercion.

Carr says that while the media focus is often on sex trafficking, more labor trafficking cases are actually identified.
