LANSING, MI – Michigan's drivers may soon not have to worry about annual fees for too many points on their licenses. A bill that would repeal a law that fines drivers for their points passed easily Wednesday through a state House committee.
The driver responsibility law has been around since 2003, but lawmakers have agreed for the past few years that the law does not reduce bad driving.
James Walker is with the National Motorists Association.
"Three years later, the law is still on the books and still destroying lives," Walker says. "At your hearing in June the same sorts of people gave the same sorts of testimony - everyone asking for repeal. A series of town hall meetings this year all asked for complete repeal."
House fiscal analysts say the state has only collected about half of the driver responsibility fees.
