LANSING, MI –

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is expected to jump into the race for governor of Michigan next week.

AUDIO:
Bernero is expected to make stops in Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids Monday to announce he is seeking the Democratic nomination. He formed a campaign committee a couple weeks ago and has been talking to Democrats around the state about fundraising and organization. He has also set up a campaign headquarters.

Bernero began his second term as Lansing mayor last month. Before being mayor, Bernero was a state legislator.

Bernero's campaign did not return phone calls, but multiple sources confirmed he is running.

State Representative Alma Wheeler Smith has been the only Democrat openly running since Lieutenant Governor John Cherry dropped out last month. House Speaker Andy Dillon says he will make his plans known before the end of the month, and there are more possible candidates. There are five Republicans seeking their party's nomination.
