LANSING, MI –

Former Genesee County Treasurer Dan Kildee filed paperwork with the state Tuesday to run for the Democratic nomination for governor.

AUDIO:
Kildee says he is the only Democratic candidate who would be able to win the gubernatorial election in November. Although he hasn't formally launched his campaign, he says he does intend to run.

"Everything I've heard around the state and from folks around me says that there's room for me in this race," he says. "And so, we're off."

Kildee thinks he can attract labor groups and other Democratic Party loyalists, but he also knows that he is seeking to attract groups that may like other candidates, such as Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and state Representative Alma Wheeler Smith. House Speaker Andy Dillon has not yet announced whether he will turn his exploratory committee into an official campaign.
