MSU student in LA to see debut of her Oscars dress

By AP

EAST LANSING, MI –

No silkworms died in the making of Suzy Amis Cameron's Oscars dress, designed with environmental friendliness in mind by a 21-year-old Michigan State University student.

The wife of "Avatar" director James Cameron unveils the silk dress Wednesday night, when she and her husband host a pre-Oscars party in Los Angeles.

After that, she's wearing it at Sunday's Academy Awards, at which James Cameron's movie has nine nominations.

The designer is Jillian Granz, a senior design major from Canton, Mich.

The dress uses "peace silk" in which the worms aren't boiled to harvest the fibers.

Amis Cameron sponsored the "Red Carpet Green Dress" competition to support Muse, an educational group in Topanga Canyon, Calif.
