LANSING, MI –
Democrats who run the Michigan House have passed bills they say will bring more transparency to political campaign spending.
The main bill passed the House 64-42 Tuesday, mostly along party lines. The bills now go to the Republican-led Senate.
The bills would require some reporting and disclaimers for spending by corporations and labor unions related to election campaigns. Foreign companies, recipients of federal bailout cash and businesses with state contracts or tax incentives couldn't spend on campaigns.
Supporters of the bills say they're needed because of a U.S. Supreme Court decision earlier this year. That ruling says companies and unions can't be prohibited from using money from their general treasuries for campaign ads.
