Cabrera, Verlander lead Tigers past Blue Jays

By AP

DETROIT – Miguel Cabrera started a three-run eighth inning with an RBI double, and Justin Verlander settled down after a rocky start to go eight innings in the Detroit Tigers' 5-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.

Verlander (12-5) struggled the first two innings but ended up allowing only two runs on eight hits. He walked two batters in the first but didn't issue another base on balls.

Ricky Romero (7-7) took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in seven-plus innings.

Johnny Damon started the eighth with a walk, bringing Shawn Camp out of the Toronto bullpen to replace Romero. Magglio Ordonez singled, moving Damon to second, and Cabrera followed with his third hit - a tie-breaking double into the left-center field gap.
