Ex-Detroit mayor to review oil spill claim process

MARSHALL, MI –

The company whose pipeline is responsible for a southern Michigan oil spill has retained former Detroit mayor and state Supreme Court justice Dennis Archer to review its process of handling damage claims.

Enbridge Inc. President Patrick Daniel says Wednesday the company has settled about 500 damage claims and is in the process of reviewing hundreds more related to an oil spill that was reported July 26 near Marshall. More than 800,000 gallons spilled from the pipeline and a cleanup continues in the Kalamazoo River.

Daniel says Archer will work at the company's expense but he did not provide payment details.

The pipeline runs from Griffith, Ind. to Sarnia, Ontario. It's not known when the pipeline may restart.
