LANSING, MI –
During GOP gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder's tenure as president of Gateway Inc., the U.S. Department of Labor charged the computer maker with denying support technician jobs to 26 qualified female applicants.
Gateway never admitted to any wrongdoing. It offered to hire the women and gave each $4,630 in back pay.
Snyder campaign spokesman Bill Nowling said Tuesday that Gateway decided to settle even though it disagreed with the finding.
The government said the discrimination took place from January to December 1996. The settlement was reached in 1998. Snyder joined Gateway in 1991, becoming president in 1996.
Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Brenda Lawrence says the incident shows Michigan women can't trust Snyder to protect their interests.
