GM head vows to focus on China

By AP

BEIJING –
The head of General Motors Co. says China will play a bigger role in the company's plans as it moves to capitalize further on the world's largest auto market.

Chief Executive Daniel Akerson told a news conference Tuesday that China was central to the company's global strategy.

GM sold more cars and trucks in China last year than it did in the U.S. for the first time in the company's 102-year history. An expansion of sales into provincial cities helped the company sell 2.35 million vehicles in China in 2010, up 29 percent.

GM's January sales also hit a monthly record high of 268,071 in January, up 22.3 percent from a year earlier.
