The state office tasked with monitoring Michigan’s lowest performing schools will be put under the direct control of Governor Rick Snyder.

Right now, the elected state Board of Education has control over the state School Reform Office. Governor Snyder has signed an executive order that would put the office under the control of his budget office.
“Which will give us an opportunity for me to be more proactive on educational issues,” he says.
State Board of Education President John Austin says moving the office into a department with no education expertise will not help school improvement.
The School Reform Office is separate from the controversial Education Achievement Authority – which oversees 15 schools in Detroit.
