Keeping drugs out of Michigan's water supply

michiganpharmacists.org

Today, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Michigan Pharmacists Association will accept unwanted, unused or outdated prescription medications for safe disposal. The event is at the state capital in Lansing from 10:30 a-m to 1 p-m. The idea is to keep these medications out of the state’s water supply. The collection of pharmaceuticals got us to wondering how big a problem this is, or how big it could be.

To learn more about why officials want to keep medications out of the water supply, Current State speaks with Bryce Feighner. He’s chief of the office of waste management and radiological protection with the Department of Environmental Quality.

This segment is supported by Michigan State University's Knight Center for Environmental Journalism. More news about the Great Lakes environment can be found at GreatLakesEcho.org and on Current State every Tuesday as part of our partnership.

Scott Pohl has maintained an on-call schedule reporting for WKAR following his retirement after 36 years on the air at the station.
