Bike adventurist says northern Michigan trails are best on Earth

Kevin Lavery/WKAR

The calendar says it’s spring. You may be getting over a dose of cabin fever and dreaming of a getaway Up North. If you’re pulling your dusty bicycle out of the garage, then a Michigan author has your guide to some of the best trails in the Lower Peninsula.Bob Downes is a former triathlete who years ago used to ride up to 100 miles in a weekend when he was training. He’s been all over the world, biking in countries from India to Ireland. He’s also a former newspaper editor, so he’s combined those two passions in a new book called “Biking Northern Michigan".

Current State’s Kevin Lavery talks with Bob Downes about cycling in Michigan.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
