The Michigan Welcome Center on U.S. 127 near Clare is a landmark for countless drivers making "up north" excursions.

In Michigan, “up north” is more of a state of mind than a physical orientation. It’s a cultural phenomenon we cherish in the Great Lakes State. Current State’s Kevin Lavery takes us to what might actually be the “Gateway to the North.”

Were you among the thousands of people who headed “up north” for the Memorial Day weekend?  If so, then you know the mere words themselves hold a special place in the hearts of all Michiganders.

Current State’s Kevin Lavery got in a little kayaking on the Au Sable River. But on his way up US-127, Kevin stopped at what just might be Michigan’s “Gateway to the North.”

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
