Many in the Eaton Rapids area were impacted by the fire at Meridian Magnesium Products of America. The Credit Union LAFCU has organized a toiletries and food drive to help. WKAR’s Katie Cook has more.

Ever since the recent fire and series of explosions at Meridian Products of America, local charities have seen an increase in requests for assistance.

Specifically, Heart and Hands Inc., a charity that helps meet emergency needs in the Eaton Rapids area and Public School District.

LAFCU has organized a drive to collect toiletry items and food for the Eaton Rapids community.

Alyssa Sliger is LAFCU’s Marketing and Communications Specialist.

“The Meridian Magnesium Plant is Eaton Rapids’ largest employer and so there’s been a ripple effect in that area and many people have been impacted and so Heart and Hands is specifically seeing greater need.”

Sliger says there’s a great need for toiletries for men, women and children, including personal grooming items like soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, as well as baby toiletries like diapers and wipes.

Donations can be dropped off an any LAFCU branch during the month of June, weekdays from 9 to 5:30, and Saturdays from 9 to noon.
