Michigan's Natural Resources department is hosting an open house to discuss plans for a 6-mile loop of the Iron Belle Trail on Detroit's Belle Isle.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Flynn Pavilion on the island park.

Plans call for a 10-foot-wide (3-meter), paved, multiuse trail that creates the hiking route of the Iron Belle Trail as a dedicated trail of its own. Trail design is expected to be completed in September with construction to start next year. A National Park Service grant will fund the project's first-phase construction.

The statewide trail encompasses more than 2,000 miles (3,218 kilometers) of hiking and biking routes. It allows users to explore forests and areas around rivers while connecting to cities and towns.

The trail is about 68 percent complete.
