Construction has officially begun on a new music building at Michigan State University.
MSU will build a 37,000 square foot music pavilion to provide badly needed teaching and rehearsal spaces. The last time an addition was built to the FDR-era building was in 1956.
Jazz Studies Professor Rodney Whitaker says the new pavilion won’t just relieve overcrowded rooms, it will also feature state of the art acoustics.
“Often times, you rehearsal your ensemble in a bad room, and you get on stage and you hear mistakes you didn’t hear in rehearsal,” says Whitaker. “So, it’s really going to change our lives. It’s going to provide a quality of life.”
The current Hart Recital Hall will be demolished to make way for the new structure. A formal groundbreaking is scheduled for October, with completion expected in two years.
