A medical marijuana business plans to build a headquarters for its state operations in southern Michigan.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports Michigan Pure Med plans to break ground this fall on a growing and processing center in Marshall that in five years is expected to employ about 400 people.

Joe Jarvis, chief operations officer of Pure Med, says the company also plans research and development at the facility.

He says the company is "taking a pharmaceutical approach to the market and bringing high-quality, low-cost product and making that available to Michigan patients."

Pure Med had previously received approval for a smaller site.

The newspaper says the company will have 10 retail locations or provisioning centers in Michigan.

Michigan voters approved marijuana use in 2008 for some chronic medical condition.
