As of Tuesday afternoon (April 14), there are now more than 27,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Michigan. While that total continues to grow, health officials believe the number of new daily cases may be leveling off.
So far, the high water mark for new daily cases of COVID-19 in Michigan came on April 6, when the state logged just over 1,200.
The numbers have fluctuated since then, with a notable spike of more than 1,000 on April 10.
However, Ingham Health Officer Linda Vail says the rate of climb now appears less intense.
“We are definitely looking at a shift in what we’ve been seeing to a less steep curve, into a fewer number of cases per day…which is eventually going to get us to the apex and down the other side,” says Vail.
Vail says it will take a combination of expanded testing and fewer daily cases before officials can consider re-opening shuttered businesses.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer says a return to normalcy is “on the horizon.”
