Michigan health officials are monitoring a COVID-19 outbreak at Herbruck's Poultry Ranch in Ionia County. It's one of the state's largest egg production facilities.

Michigan health officials say they’re monitoring a COVID-19 outbreak at one of the state’s largest egg producers.

Ingham Health Officer Linda Vail says her department is cooperating with the state and Ionia County to investigate an outbreak at Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch near Saranac.

She says a number of refugees employed at the company but live in Ingham County and surrounding areas have tested positive for COVID-19.

Vail says officials are conducting contract tracing to track its spread.

“Right now it is contained,” says Vail.  “We continue to monitor it as does every health department in this region that has cases there.”

In a written statement, president Greg Herbruck says employees who tested positive are recovering at home.

He says the company is taking “proactive, preventative measures” to keep employees safe, including using personal protective equipment and working in pods to minimize the risk of contamination.

On Tuesday, President Trump signed an executive order requiring all U.S. meat and poultry processing facilities to remain open during the coronavirus pandemic.

That concerns some who say the order threatens worker safety.
