Michigan Gov. Signs Cyber School Measure into Law

WKAR file photo

More online charter schools will be allowed in Michigan under a law signed by Gov. Rick Snyder. The law signed Tuesday by the Republican also will allow changes that supporters say provide more choices. But critics the changes are premature and lack quality control.

One measure lifts the cap on cyber charter schools from two to 15 by 2014 and another expands dual enrollment options for high school students earning college credit.

The cyber school measure calls for capping the total number of cyber students at 2% of the state's student population, which could boost the number to 30,000 students. Critics say the number could be much higher but state officials have said the cap will be strictly enforced.
