Hacker Strikes "CLEAR" Unit's Server at MSU

Michigan State University is investigating the unauthorized access of email addresses and encrypted passwords from a server within the College of Arts and Letters.

Updated 11:40 a.m. 12-6-12:  MSU officials say a server used by the Center for Language, Education And Research (CLEAR), a subdivision of the College of Arts and Letters, was hacked Wednesday.

Officials say the incident only affected a small group of employees and not the full college staff.

In a statement, MSU spokesman Kent Casella says MSU IT Services is working with the owners of a website where the information was copied. The site has been taken down.

IT Services is reaching out to people whose account information was hacked. MSU police are also looking into the case.

Earlier, the website eSecurity Planet reported that a hacker known as DARWINARE claimed to have published 1,500 names, email addresses, passwords, user ID’s and mailing addresses from MSU.

The same hacker claimed to have breached the Amazon UK website last month.
