A lawmaker is skeptical of changes to legislation giving the state control over more of Michigan's worst schools.
Senate Education Committee Chairman Phil Pavlov says he has concerns with allowing intermediate school districts to run bad schools instead of a state authority. The St. Clair Republican tells The Associated Press that running a school isn't part of an intermediate district's mission, and the provision could be a delay tactic.
Intermediate districts are service agencies that help regular districts with programs like special education.
Changes to the bill like giving intermediate districts the power to intervene were crucial to getting it narrowly passed by House Republicans last month.
Supporters of the amendment say some local control should be preserved. Senators are expected to start considering the legislation in the next month.
