And while electric vehicles are still in the national conversation, it was on this day that Detroit went electric WAY back in 1892. Despite opposition from people that said the horse-drawn carts did the job just fine as well as some still-pending legal challenges, the Detroit Citizens Street Railway put up wires along Jefferson Avenue and at 7:42am on August 22nd 1892, test trips between Baldwin and Woodward Avenues signaled the start of Electric Trolley Cars in Detroit, and regular public operation began the next day.
