The state Legislature reconvenes Wednesday to continue its “lame duck” session.
As The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports, Democrats fear Republican leaders will take up a bill that would assign the state’s Electoral College votes by congressional district.
If that legislation was in effect during the 2012 election, Republican Mitt Romney would have gotten the majority of Michigan’s electoral votes. That’s despite losing a majority of the popular vote.
State House Democratic Leader Tim Greimel says moving the bill in lame duck would jeopardize any bipartisan cooperation going forward.
“Pushing the Electoral College bill will be toxic to the atmosphere in Lansing,” he says.
Supporters of the bill say it would attract more presidential contenders of both parties to Michigan. Governor Rick Snyder and the state Senate leader have said they’re not eager to take up the legislation.
