Starting Thursday, recreational marijuana is officially legal in Michigan. But regulating legal pot remains a bit hazy.
Voters approved a ballot referendum allowing those age 21 and older to carry as much as 2-and-a-half ounces of marijuana, grow 12 plants in their home and use it on private property with some conditions if they’re renting.
Detroit medical marijuana dispensary owner Stuart Carter says it will free law enforcement to focus on things other than marijuana.
“The police made it their business to bust young people with pot, particularly young black men, historically," said Carter. "And now everybody can carry two and a half ounces.”
But the leader of the Michigan state senate wants to ban growing marijuana in homes altogether while the state is about a year and a half away from permitting stores to sell it for recreational use.
