Sparrow Hospital in Lansing is providing same-day COVID-19 testing for existing patients and staff considered most at risk of contracting the disease.

Sparrow Hospital has become one of five facilities in Michigan to conduct same-day testing of possible coronavirus patients.

Sparrow produced its first COVID-19 test results on March 15.

Now that the FDA has eased regulations, they’re offering same-day testing for hospitalized patients and hospital staff.

They are not testing people who aren’t patients or who don’t work there.

Dr. James Richard is the medical director of Sparrow Laboratories.  He says results are coming back fairly quickly.

“We are able to turn around a test (in) less than 48 hours, and usually less than 24,” Richard says.

Richard says Sparrow has limited testing capacity, and must send its overflow to LabCorp, which has a four to five day turnaround.
