Ann Arbor teen set to join inaugural Carnegie Hall youth orchestra

New York’s Carnegie Hall has launched a new initiative to bring an orchestra of young American musicians to the world stage. The newly-formed National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America finished its audition process this month to form an ensemble of 120-strong. The group will meet in New York in June to rehearse selected repertoire.

Then, after performances at Carnegie Hall and Washington’s Kennedy Center, the orchestra will perform on tour dates in Moscow, St. Petersburg and London. Valery Gergiev will lead the orchestra. Violinist Joshua Bell will join the tour as featured soloist.

Players from across the US were selected for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Four musicians come from Michigan, including Ann Arbor violinist Giancarlo Latta, who's a senior at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School.

WKAR’s Peter Whorf speaks with Giancarlo about the life-changing experience he’s about to undertake.
