Lansing Catholic Senior Golfer Abigail Meder Accepts the LSJ Girls Golfer of the Year Award

The Lansing State Journal held its second annual Lansing State Journal Sports Awards show Wednesday night at the Wharton Center to honor the best of mid-Michigan high school athletics.

Competitors in 31 sports were recognized for their contributions. Parents and friends were also in attendance, and two-time Olympic gold-medal boxer and Flint-native Claressa Shields was the featured speaker.

Shields talked to the young athletes about overcoming obstacles and finding a passion, among other topics.

Numerous awards were doled out throughout the evening. Williamston’s Sy Barnett won ‘Male Athlete of the Year,’ while Autumn Kissman of Mason took home ‘Female Athlete of the Year.’

Moments from the red-carpet event can be accessed with the Twitter hashtag #LSJSportsAwards.

WKAR has closed the gap left by the loss of federal funding. Because of you, trusted journalism, inspiring stories, and classical music remain freely available to everyone in mid-Michigan.
Now the work continues — your monthly gift helps maintain this success and keeps public media free for all.
