Friends of Earle Robinson said farewell to the SportsTalk/870 host and WKAR sports director at a gala dinner following the Spartan Sports Journalism Spectactular on April 11.

Robinson ended his career of 39 years at WKAR. Starting as a radio producer, he moved into sports as the co-host of SportsTalk with former WKAR staffer Jim Adams and stepped into the solo host role in  1995 at Adams' retirement.

Joining Earle for the dinner were members of his family, friends and colleagues from WKAR and a host of renowned sports journalists from around the country. Special guests at the dinner were three former MSU Spartans and former NBA players, Steve Smith, Greg Kelser and Mateen Cleaves.

The dinner wrapped up a day of activities with the journalists and former NBA stars who now cover sports themselves. Included in their agenda were talks to MSU sports journalism students, a "speed coaching" event, during which students had five minutes with each of the guests to "sell themselves" and back-to-back panels focusing on sports journalism today.

During the panels, which were live-streamed on WKAR.org, Al Martin, sports reporter/anchor for WLNS/6 in Lansing, was announced as WKAR's new sports producer/reporter.
