Carlton Valentine played basketball at Michigan State from 1985 to 1988, and coached the Lansing Sexton Big Reds from 2006 to his retirement this year. He also coached his son Drew, who went on to play basketball for Oakland, and son Denzel, who is currently a guard at Michigan State.

During his seven seasons at Lansing Sexton, Valentine won four Class B district, three regional and two state championships. He was also named the 2011 Detroit Free Press Coach of the Year.
