WKAR StayTuned Update

A Day Devoted Entirely To Black Composers | 90.5 Classical

Fri., Jun. 19 9am-2pm on 90.5 FM | 90.5 Classical devotes a day to feature composers from the African diaspora.

For WKAR & 90.5 Classical, representative programming remains an important endeavor. Not just for Juneteeth and the commemoration of the end of slavery, but to hear these artists year-round. Particularly for a genre of music which has oftentimes been suppresive of the othered-voices.

We will play works by MSU grad Dr. Adolphus C. Hailstork, Joseph Bologne ("Le Mozart Noir"), and many more, but we'll begin at 9am with composer Jessie Montgomery and her very timely treatment of The Star-Spangled Banner.

We choose to expand our music library on days such as Juneteenth, and encourage our fellow public radio music stations to do the same, as those pieces will remain in our library forever. Through this, it helps us experience music on a deeper level, and to listen more.
