2017 'One Book, One Community' selection announced

'A Long Way Home' book cover

The "One Book, One Community" title for this year is "A Long Way Home" by Saroo Brierly and Larry Buttrose. Saroo's true story taking him from India to Australia and back again is a best-seller that was later made into the Oscar-nominated film "Lion."

At the age of five, Saroo was separated from his brother and in his confusion boarded a train in rural India. He wound up alone, thousands of miles away in Calcutta, where he ultimately was adopted by an Australian couple. As an adult, modern technology helped him find his birth mother and other relatives.

"One Book, One Community" seeks to link East Lansing residents and the MSU community, all reading the same title and gathering to discuss the issues raised by the book. The theme this year is "Lost and Found: A Journey of  Self Discovery."

Saroo will kick off a month of events with a community talk at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center on August 27th and an address the next day to MSU's incoming class at the Academic Welcome event held in the Breslin Student Events Center.
