“America’s disappearing middle class” is probably a term you’ve heard thrown around in the news lately. But what does that actually mean? We talk to MSU economist Charley Ballard about how the middle class is faring here in Michigan and what its future looks like.

Income inequality is coming up regularly in the long build-up to next year’s Presidential election. There is evidence that income inequality has risen in the United States, some data suggest noticeably, since the 1970’s.

The issue has become a prominent feature of the political divide in the country, with the left insisting on the importance of a shared prosperity, while the right often downplays the need or the ability to influence the issue.

So how does Michigan fit in the income inequality debate?

Current State speaks with MSU economics professor Charley Ballard.
