Grand Ledge Public Schools has chosen its next superintendent. The Grand Ledge school board voted unanimously Wednesday to approve Dr. Marcus Davenport as its next academic leader.

Davenport was formerly superintendent of the Beecher Community School District in Flint and a principal at Thomas Edison Elementary in Detroit.

Davenport also has experience as a middle school educator in the Atlanta area.

The hiring comes nearly a year after former superintendent Brian Metcalf was dismissed for writing insensitive comments regarding the killing of George Floyd.

The Grand Ledge school board is expected to complete contract negotiations with Davenport by mid-June. He is expected to start as superintendent on July 1.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
