Hundreds of dogs will compete for glory and a few snacks this weekend at the Winterland Classic Cluster Dog Show at the MSU Pavillion. Current State’s Kevin Lavery has a preview of this long-running mid-Michigan tradition.

They say every dog must have its day. This weekend, some will get two.

About 1,500 dogs and their owners or handlers are coming to East Lansing to compete for the coveted Best in Show title at the MSU Pavillion. The Winterland Classic Cluster Dog Show is hosted by the Ingham County Kennel Club and attracts entries from across the U.S. and Canada.

Current State’s Kevin Lavery speaks with two club members, president Mark Jaeger and secretary Vicki Bovee, along with  “Polar,” a fluffy white Bischon Frise.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
