The final community meeting to discuss next week’s income tax ballot proposal in East Lansing will be held tonight.
City Manager George Lahanas will host the meeting. Officials say that if passed, the measure would generate about $5-million a year and would be dedicated to police and fire protection, infrastructure, and payments to currently unfunded pension liabilities.
The major difference from the proposal that failed last year is a 12-year time limit. As a city charter amendment, the city council would be unable to change it.
The tax rate would be 1-percent for residents and one-half percent for non-residents who work in East Lansing. Homeowners would also see a property tax cut.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Red Cedar Spirits on Merritt Road.
