Michigan State University interim president John Engler said he lost a friend and close colleague in George H.W. Bush.

The former president died Friday at age 94.

He and Engler worked together starting in the 1980s and Engler was governor of Michigan while Bush was president.

Engler said Bush was a thoughtful and confident leader in personal and political life. He remembered going to Camp David after Bush’s failed 1992 presidential bid and being impressed with his attitude.

“He had strong values and he really…you’d say he’s a role model. The personal qualities, his integrity, his humility, made him someone anyone in public life ought to emulate,”said Engler.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday morning in Washington, D.C. Engler will attend.
