This week, the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame will consider the status of an inductee who has pleaded guilty to embezzlement. Marylou Olivarez Mason was inducted into the Hall in 2014, honored for founding Michigan Hispanic Heritage Month.
Her history also includes time on the Lansing Community College board and the executive board of the Michigan Department of Civil Service.
The 81-year-old Mason pleaded guilty last week to embezzling more than $70-thousand from a fund established for a statue of Cesar Chavez in Lansing. She faces sentencing on January 23, 2019.
Michigan Women Forward, the organization that operates the Women’s Hall of Fame in the Meridian Mall in Okemos, will meet on Thursday to discuss her standing.
