Michigan State University is commissioning a new, independent report into its handling of the Nassar sexual abuse case.
The MSU Board of Trustees has selected Chicago law firm McDermott, Will and Emery to investigate how it acted on complaints against Larry Nassar. The former sports physician is serving a de facto life sentence for molesting hundreds of girls and young women.
Trustee Brian Mosallam, who initially called for an outside review more than a year ago, says MSU is now “ripping off the Band-Aid.”
“The results of this investigation will be shared with all of you in a public report,” Mosallam says. “All findings will be made transparent with the public where necessary. There will be accountability.”
The announcement comes in the midst of a separate investigation by the Michigan Attorney General’s office.
MSU also announced that a permanent fund to provide counseling and mental health services to sexual assault survivors will be available September 1.
