At Michigan State University, 95 students are isolating or quarantining on campus.
Some MSU students living on campus are isolating because they have tested positive for COVID-19, while others are quarantining because they have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive or are symptomatic and waiting for test results. In all, that’s 95 students as of Wednesday.
Kat Cooper is Director of Communications for Residential and Hospitality Services at MSU. She says the university has been preparing for a spike in cases since March. “We have all the resources in place," Cooper states, "but we are certainly on watch for that kind of a spike.”
Food is being provided to those students, and delivery is contactless. One way the students are being monitored is if they fail to place a food order a day in advance. Cooper continues that "we haven’t seen this be a problem, really, but if someone suddenly stopped ordering any food, that would be a key to us that something is wrong, that their health may be deteriorating.”
MSU discouraged moving to campus for the semester, so many of these students do not have a roommate and do not share a bathroom. They have been allowed to stay in their rooms. Forty-three of those 95 students are being housed at the Kellogg Hotel and Convention Center.
