Group Protests Inside Detroit City Hall Lobby

wxyz.com

A building official says a crowd of people who held a protest in the Detroit City Hall lobby temporarily disrupted services.

Detroit-Wayne Joint Building Authority executive director Gregory McDuffee says the general public's access to city offices were stopped for about an hour Thursday after some protesters made it past metal detectors in the lobby.

Demonstrators demanded an audience with Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr. They sat on the floor, chanting and singing. Guards denied them access to elevators leading to Orr's 11th-floor office.

The protesters were gone before 2 p.m.

The demonstration came the same day a coalition of groups filed a federal lawsuit against Michigan's emergency manager law.

Orr's first day on the job was Monday. He's tasked with guiding Detroit out of a financial emergency.
