The Lansing Economic Area Partnership hosted a seminar for local businesses at Lansing Community College Tuesday on Lansing’s suitability for defense contracting.  The seminar included a presentation on the Defense and National Security industry and how Lansing can attract investment in that sector.

A modest office on Lansing’s north side was plastered with Mike Bloomberg signs Tuesday, as his campaign opened another office in Michigan. Staffers touted the presidential hopeful's political experience, highlighting his 12-year tenure as Mayor of New York City to a room of supporters.

Michigan State University’s Broad Art Museum had one of its windows vandalized earlier in January, and the MSU Police Department is asking the community for assistance in identifying 3 suspects who were caught on security cameras.

Last week, members of the Lansing community crowded into an info session to share their concerns about Mark Coscarella’s history. Coscarella was Lansing’s acting superintendent and lead candidate before allegations of sexual harassment from his past resurfaced. 

After both medical and recreational marijuana were legalized this year's crop of Lansing city council candidates are tasked with taking a position on the future of marijuana in the city.

After the State of Michigan voted to legalize recreational marijuana in the 2018 midterms, cities and municipalities across the state are now deliberating what role marijuana will play in their future. Yet for many, including Lansing, markets are still developing and businesses are just beginning to be licensed forcing city council candidates to take a stand on how permissive they'll be toward cannabis businesses.  

 

 


Newcomers made the biggest gains on both the Lansing and East Lansing City Council's with Brandon Betz ousting incumbent Jody Washington. And, Lisa Babcock and Jessy Gregg knocking off Eric Altmann in East Lansing.

East Lansing has a city income tax for the first time this year. It was passed by voters in 2018 after a previous iteration was defeated in a referendum several years before. Many of the candidates running for council this year support the income tax, but how much revenue the tax will net for the city remains largely unknown.


Last week, the Trump administration changed the Title X program, which helps fund access to reproductive care for low income women. The new rule mandates clinics can’t talk to patients about abortion and still receive funding.  Planned Parenthood clinics across the country withdrew from the program in response to the changes. Now, stakeholders in Michigan are disagreeing about how the rule change will impact Michigan.
